GEO Audit vs SEO Audit: What's the Difference?

A GEO audit checks whether AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews can reach, read, trust and cite a business. An SEO audit checks whether a site can rank in search results and turn visits into customers. GEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it. An AI system can't cite a page it can't find, so both audits start from the same foundations; the GEO audit then looks at what decides whether AI systems quote a business and describe it correctly. This article explains what each audit covers, where they overlap and which one to start with.

In short: An SEO audit covers the foundations: technical health, content, keywords, links, competitors and conversion, plus a short AI section. A GEO audit covers the layer on top: AI crawler access, passage structure, entity and off-site signals, and direct testing of what assistants say. Most businesses should fix the foundations first; GEO fits once those are in place.

What is GEO?

GEO stands for generative engine optimization: making a site retrievable, quotable and accurately described in AI-generated answers. The term comes from a 2023 research paper by researchers at Princeton and other institutions, which tested how content changes affect visibility in generative search engines. Related terms include AEO (answer engine optimization) and AI search optimization.

GEO matters because more questions are answered before anyone clicks. In a Pew Research Center study of 68,879 searches, 18% of Google searches in March 2025 produced an AI summary, and users clicked a regular result in 8% of visits with a summary against 15% without one. In BrightLocal's 2026 consumer survey, 45% of consumers said they use ChatGPT and other AI tools for local recommendations.

What is a GEO audit?

A GEO audit is a point-by-point review of what stands between a business and AI visibility. It checks whether AI crawlers can reach the site, whether pages are structured into passages an AI system can quote, whether the business is defined consistently across the web, and what assistants actually say when buyers ask.

The Illucrum GEO Audit covers 51 points in 7 sections: AI crawler and retrieval access (9), classic SEO foundations (8), passage and chunk structure (10), entity and authority (8), structured data (5), prompt visibility testing (6), and measurement (5).

What is an SEO audit?

An SEO audit is a point-by-point review of what decides whether a site is found and chosen in search results. It checks technical health, on-page SEO, keywords, backlinks, competitors, trust and conversion, and ends with a prioritized list of fixes.

Illucrum's site-type SEO audits, the Website, SaaS, E-commerce and Local Business audits, each cover 54 points. Each includes a short AI search section of four to six points, which checks AI Overviews, assistant visibility and AI crawler access at a basic level.

How does a GEO audit differ from an SEO audit?

A GEO audit and an SEO audit differ in what they treat as success. An SEO audit measures rankings and clicks; a GEO audit measures citations, recommendations and the accuracy of what AI systems say. The overlap between the two is real but incomplete. In an Ahrefs study of 15,000 long-tail queries from July 2025, 76% of the citations in Google's AI Overviews came from pages in Google's top 10, while only about 8% of the pages cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot ranked in the top 10 for the original question. Ahrefs points to query fan-out as a key reason: assistants search several variations of a question and cite pages that rank across them. A page still has to be found in a search index before it can be cited; GEO covers what decides which of those pages get quoted.

What does a GEO audit check that an SEO audit doesn't?

A GEO audit checks four things an SEO audit covers only briefly or not at all:

Which audit should you start with?

For most small and medium-sized businesses, start with an SEO audit. AI citations mostly go to sites that are already indexed, reasonably authoritative and mentioned on trusted sources, and structure and schema work produce little citation lift for a site without that base. An SEO audit also includes a short AI section, so the most urgent AI problems, such as a crawler block, still surface.

A GEO audit is the better starting point when:

  1. The site already ranks well in Google but rarely appears in AI answers.
  2. AI assistants describe the business inaccurately, or not at all.
  3. Buyers in your market ask AI assistants for recommendations before they search.
  4. You want a fixed prompt baseline you can rerun to track AI visibility over time.

If you only need to know whether AI crawlers can technically reach the site, the Technical SEO Audit covers that in three points, without the prompt testing.

Frequently asked questions

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. GEO depends on SEO: an AI system can't cite a page it can't find, and pages that aren't indexed or load slowly are weak candidates for any retrieval system. GEO adds checks on top of SEO for how AI systems choose, quote and describe sources. Most businesses need the SEO foundations first and GEO work second.

Does a regular SEO audit cover AI search?

Illucrum's site-type SEO audits include four to six points on AI search: AI Overview presence, assistant visibility or recommendations, answer-ready content, entity markup and AI crawler access. That catches the most common and most urgent problems. The GEO audit covers the subject in 51 points, including passage structure, off-site signals, multi-platform prompt testing and measurement.

Can you guarantee AI assistants will recommend a business?

No one can guarantee that AI assistants will recommend or cite a business, because answers vary between runs and change over time. A GEO audit finds what stands between the business and AI visibility, ranks the fixes and records a dated baseline, but the answers themselves depend on the assistants and on the rest of the web.

Can I run a GEO audit myself?

Yes. The GEO checklist lists all 51 checks with the free tools to run them, including the prompt set and platforms to test. A first pass takes six to ten hours, most of it spent running prompts two or three times on several assistants.

An SEO audit tells you whether a site can rank and convert; a GEO audit tells you whether AI systems can reach it, quote it and describe it accurately. Start with the foundations, then look at AI visibility once they are sound. All six Illucrum audits are compared on the audits page, with prices on the pricing page.
