About

A small consultancy, focused on doing one thing properly

Illucrum is an SEO consultancy. Not a full-service agency, not a content marketing shop, not a freelancer with a website. The product is a structured 52-point SEO audit, delivered as a written report with prioritised fixes.

01 / Who runs it

Meet the founder,

Illucrum is run by Szymon Kokot. A software developer turned into a SEO consultant.

SEO audits are a specific kind of work: they require research on the company, its industry, its website; gathering data through automated tools as well as manual testing so in the end a clear picture can emerge, on what are the problems and what are the opportunities. Most software developers know how to make awesome websites, but it is not enough if no one sees your website.

Szymon's background is across SaaS, e-commerce, and service businesses, with a focus on startups and SMEs that have outgrown their own SEO knowledge, both from the development and business perspective. This is what built this company, the understanding of the needs of SMEs so they can get the service they need without overpaying to get what they don't really need. SaaS audits, with e-commerce as the secondary specialism.

02 / Method

How an audit actually takes shape

Our methodology is our essence, you can't know us without knowing how we work.

  1. We research and adapt

We don't just run the same audit with the same mindset for every client. We try to understand each client and adapt the deliverable so our audits are actually useful.

  2. We collect data with automatic tools as well as manually

Some data can or even has to be gathered with automated tools. But we don't stay there, we also do our bit of manual searches and reading your website to give our clients something no automated tool can.

  3. Understanding of how SEO evolved

Years ago, SEO was about keywords and stats. Nowadays the lines between marketing, SEO and content creation are blurred. Search engines and AI try to be helpful for human users, optimizing just for a machine is not quite enough.

  4. Prioritizing

Once we have a clear picture, we prioritise the issues to be fixed, and improvements that could be implemented, to make sure your business gets the most of its website.

You can read about the process here.

03 / Recognition

The badges we earned

Our aim is to provide the best service possible to our clients. Sometimes it stays between the client and us, but sometimes it is rewarded by a third party.

04 / Commitments

What we commit to

The three things below are the operating principles for every audit. They're worth stating explicitly, for transparency purposes.

05 / Approach

Why not a retainer

The default SEO engagement is monthly retainer first, audit somewhere along the way, action items discovered as you go. That model exists because it's profitable for the agency, not because it's good for the client.

This model might be good for big international enterprises, that can spare that kind of money without a blinking. But the commitment to a retainer for a startup or SME is a little too much. Good news is, you most certainly don't need it. There is no point to overoptimize something that will work for the next two months only.

An audit is more than enough to sanitize your website, make it clean and indexable, as well as give you pointers into which direction is it worth going with it. You don't need one audit every month, one or two audits a year is more than enough.

If you are a SME or startup, there is no point in burning money on retainers, a one time audit is the way to go. The difference in price is huge, while the difference in results is not that big.
